David Richard Contemporary is pleased to present an exhibition of new and recent work by Otis Jones. The work is raw, physical and non-illusionistic—what you see is what you get. Influenced by the gestural and physical qualities of Abstract Expressionism and the early days of Minimalism, as well as a philosophy that less is more, his economy of means produces reductive geometric forms and richly textured matte surfaces that cause one to look closer and deeper, both into and beyond the layers of paint. These are contemporary works, yet the unusual shapes—particularly the not perfectly round circular pieces—and the fully revealed process—with exposed canvas edges, staples and massive wooden supports and frequently erased surfaces—make them seem more like an archeological dig. While the revealed process creates intrigue, the inviting surfaces induce a meditative state.
Otis Jones has had over 20 solo exhibitions and his work included in numerous group exhibitions in Dallas, Houston, Austin, Atlanta, Albuquerque, Santa Fe and New York, among other cities. His work is included in many public and private collections, among them, the Dallas Museum of Art, Springfield Museum of Art (Springfield, MO), Tyler Museum of Art (Tyler, TX), Witte Museum (San Antonio) and Neiman Marcus (Dallas). Jones lives and works in Dallas, Texas.
David Richard Contemporary is located in downtown Santa Fe north of the historic plaza and specializes in non-referential abstract art, featuring both historic and contemporary geometric, hard edged, Op, Pop, color field, minimal and gestural abstraction in a variety of media. The gallery represents many established mid to late-career artists who were part of important art historical movements and tendencies that occurred during the 1960s through the 1980s. The gallery also represents estates, secondary market works, and several emerging artists.
