RONNIE LANDFIELD Born in Bronx, New York in 1947, Ronnie Landfield began his studies at the Art Students’ League (where he would later become a faculty member). After further study at the Kansas City Art Institute and the San Francisco Art Institute, he returned to New York. Still only 19 years old, Landfield had a series of important breaks when his work was acquired by the architect and the famous collectors Robert and Ethel Scull and in 1967 he was included in the Whitney Annual. This early success was soon followed by exhibitions with the legendary Park Place Gallery and later Andre Emmerich. Since those early days he has remained an influential fixture on the New York art scene. Landfield’s work can be found in numerous public and private collections. Among some of the most notable museums are: The Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Institute of Chicago, Boca Raton Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, Butler Institute of American Art, Delaware Art Museum, Des Moines Arts Center, High Museum, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Kemper Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Walker Art Center, Whitney Museum of American Art, Yale University Art Gallery. Over the years his artwork was acquired by many important private collectors: Bill Blass, Charles Cowles, Phillip Johnson, Dorothy Lichtenstein, Ethel and Robert Scull, Dorothy and Herbert Vogel, et al. “The two major tendencies in my work are landscape and linear abstraction. The two tendencies came together in my stained band work that I continue to this day. I paint abstract landscapes to express my feelings that nature, which symbolizes truth, beauty and freedom to me, is endangered by indifference, over development and ecological disaster.” For Lanfield’s retrospective at the Butler Institute of American Art in 2007, director Louis Zona wrote: “To stand in front of a Landfield paintings is to be transported into a world where color feeds upon color and every inch of the canvas is considered. Ronnie Landfield is, pure and simple, one of the best painters in America.”
