The late paintings by Dorothy Krakovsky are full of energy and color, which is not surprising given that late in her career she finally had an opportunity to study and paint at Hunter College in New York City under Robert Swain, the renowned color theorist. Krakovsky had an intuitive sense of color, but at Hunter she expanded her awareness of the dynamic possibilities and leveraging the interactions of adjacent colors. That combination created more vibrancy and depth in her paintings. Her long and sweeping brush strokes and compositions of swirling and spherical forms filling the canvas provided movement and kinetic effects. Her love of painting and a student of art history allowed Krakovsky to examine, borrow, conflate, and refine her influences to generate her own visual language and iconography. Her strokes and certain compositions are rooted in Abstract Expressionism and the works of Joan Mitchell with hints of geometry and references from Cubism.
