Paintings by Tadasky from the 1960s, 70s and 80s, Pushing Color Boundaries

In the 1960s, the edges of the bands of color in Tadasky’s paintings were crisp and precise. However, later in the 60s and throughout the next five-decades of his career, he pushed the edges of the outer bands of pigment by diffusing and extending the colors. He also softened all of the borders of the rings of pigment to obscure all boundaries and allow the colors to meld one into the other. Tadasky’s current exhibition, Pushing Boundaries, at David Richard Gallery examines t

Julian Stanczak (1928–2017)

ArtForum April 29, 2017 Barbara Stanczak Julian Stanczak died in my arms on March 25, 2017. His body gave up fighting, but awareness of his unique spirit only keeps growing. Living together for almost fifty-five years, Julian and I—and later our children, too—experienced many memorable adventures; we crossed the country by car from one national park to the next, from one unique experience to another. As I took in nature’s formations and found myself enthralled by America’s ge

Julian Stanczak’s Contribution to Cincinnati Art

Julian Stanczak, the Polish-born American artist who lived near Cleveland and did important work in Cincinnati, had an international reputation that was only growing when he died on March 25 at age 88. The abstract art that he called “perceptual painting” — sharply delineated lines and sections of color that seemed to change or move based on the light and the viewer’s movements — made a major cultural impact when Stanczak’s first show, Optical Paintings, opened in New York in

Visual Perception and Op Art

The seminal 1965 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, The Responsive Eye, provided many viewers with their first exposure to what would become to be called ‘Op Art.’ The scale of the show brought to the fore an international gathering of artists who, individually and collectively, were exploring new theories of visual perception. Perhaps ‘new’ is not quite the word as many of these concepts were born in the 19th century by a diverse group of theorists ranging from Johan

Julian Stanczak "Elusive Transparencies"

Click here to view catalog Elusive Transparencies When I lived in Africa in the 1940s, I enjoyed observing the haze of the lifting dew, the clouds of smoke in the distance, the thick fog in the rainy season. I made watercolors trying to capture the haze that separated me from the objects, the haze that seemed to stack filters in layers of space. Watercolor was a great medium for this because you could apply films of color with a simple repeat of the brush stroke. My waterco
